Newport Street WW1 Graffiti Wall

In Newport Street there is a wall on which a number of WW1 soldiers have carved their names. I will add a better photograph and more details and identities as I discover them.

J.M. carved in 1915. This is probably John Meagher who is commemorated on the St Mary’s RC War Memorial.

A.B. probably carved in 1915 – unknown.

B.B. carved in 1916 – unknown.

G.W. probably carved in 1916 – unknown.

Possibly another G.W. carved in 1917 and 1922 – unknown.

Could one of these G.W.s be C.W. who is C. Wakelam on the St Mary and St Chad’s War Memorial?

F.H. carved in 1917 and embellished with a Staffordshire knot. Returned and carved the date 1921 – unknown.

H.D. carved in 1917 and embellished with a Staffordshire knot – unknown.

A.E. Could this be A.F. who is A. Farmer commemorated on the St Mary and St Chad’s War Memorial?

W.G. carved his initials. This is probably William Green who is commemorated on the St Mary’s RC War Memorial.

J.R. Could this be J.B., John Bill or Ball who is commemorated on the St Mary’s RC War Memorial?

P.B. carved his initials. This is probably Patrick Bradley who is commemorated on the St Mary’s RC War Memorial.

J.W.P. Could this be G.W.P. who is probably G.W. Pearce commemorated on the St Mary and St Chad’s War Memorial?

D. Ward, probably the son of Mr G. J. and Alice Ward, of The Pavement.
